Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Facility

The Biomedical Center offers access to two flow cytometers and well-equipped facility to measure soluble molecules, such as cytokines, chemokines and growth factors, in various fluids and in cells.

The Department of Immunology at Landspítali has four flow cytometers. The BD FACSLyric flow cytometer has 3 lasers and detects 12 colours and 14 parameters, and is for in vitro diagnostic use. It replaces the Navios flow cytometer with 3 lasers detecting up to 10 colours. The newest flow cytometer is the BD FACSymphony A3 cell analyser with 5 lasers to detect up to 28 colours and 30 parameters. The forth flow cytometer is the Sony SH800 flow cytometer, which has 4 lasers to detect up to 6 colours and 8 parameters. The Sony is also a cell sorter allowing 2-way sorting, into tubes or plates, at one time.

Trained staff runs all machines and can assist in setting up staining, analysing and cell sorting protocols.

In addition, Navios flow cytometers are also situated at the Blood Bank and Department of Haematology, Landspítali.
