Title: Cancer in Iceland; the current and future situation

Abstract: A large increase in the number of cancer cases worldwide is predicted in the coming years and decades. At the same time, due to advances in cancer treatment, the number of people who survive a cancer diagnosis is increasing. In this talk, the future forecast for Iceland will be presented, it will be compared with the neighboring countries and it will be discussed what effect the increase in cancer cases will have on the need for health services.

Short bio: Sigríður Gunnarsdóttir is the director of the Research and Registration Center at the Icelandic Cancer Society. She holds a joint position as a professor of oncology nursing and the University of Iceland and faculty chair of oncology nursing at Landspitali University Hospital. From 2012-2022 she was the Chief Nursing Officer at Landspitali University Hospital in Iceland.

She completed her PhD in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 2004, MS in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 2000, and BS in Nursing from University of Iceland in 1997. 

Her main area of research has been on pain and symptom management, psychosocial effects of cancer and effects of cancer on the family.
