Immunology and Microbiology

The Biomedical Center has a number of both accomplished and upcoming scientists working on research in immunology and microbiology. The research topics cover various aspects of the immune system, i.e. the immune response in health and disease, as well as different aspects of infections, diseases, and healthy carriage of various microorganisms.

The immune system is a complex network of cells and molecules that protect the body from diseases. It detects and responds to a wide variety of pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites, but it also protects the body from cancer cells and foreign material that might be harmful.

Dysfunction of the immune system can cause allergy, autoimmune diseases, inflammatory diseases, transplant rejections and cancer. In addition, the body may experience immune deficiency, rendering the body less able to defend itself, resulting in recurring and life-threatening infections.

Immunology covers the study of all aspects of the immune system.

The vast majority of the cells in the body are symbiotic microorganisms which live with the host without causing any harm. However, some microorganisms can be harmful and cause infections in various body sites. The research topics cover various aspects of clinical microbiology in both health and disease, with emphasis on projects utilising Iceland’s unique situations with regards to research on epidemiology, molecular epidemiology and virulence.

The research groups in immunology are studying various aspects of the immune system and the immune response, such as allergy, autoimmunity, vaccination, immune deficiency, inflammation and cancer. For their research the groups are utilizing animal models, tissues and cells at both molecular and genetic level, covering basic, clinical, and translational science.

The research groups in microbiology are studying different aspects of infections, diseases, and healthy carriage of various microorganisms. For their research the groups are utilizing various methods, ranging from traditional culture to the latest molecular methods. In recent years the focus has mainly been on the molecular epidemiology and pathogenesis of antimicrobial resistance.
