Who are we?

The BioMedical Center (BMC) of the University of Iceland is an official collaboration between research groups working in biomedical molecular life sciences within the University, the National Hospital, Reykjavik University, and other research institutions listed here below.

The establishment of the BMC has multiple advantages. Importantly, the BMC will establish and maintain facilities and equipment for molecular biology research through a committed collaborative effort of the research groups involved. This will lead to increased research collaborations between individual groups and common grant applications.

As a collective front of life sciences research at the University of Iceland and University Hospital, the BMC will increase visibility of this active field of science in Iceland. Furthermore, it brings together research groups that are currently widely spread throughout the University and University Hospital campuses. This will lead to dynamic interactions between graduate students further benefiting the graduate program. Finally, BMC aims to create an interactive and academic atmosphere necessary for modern life sciences research in Iceland.

Collaboration

The research groups focus on various fields of research. What unites the groups are the overarching molecular, biochemical and cellular approaches used which call for similar equipment and facilities. Although most BMC research groups are affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine or the National Hospital, BMC also encourages other groups to join the center

The research groups focus on various fields of research including molecular biology of cancer, stem cell biology, neural biology, gene and transcription regulation, gene therapy, nutritional biochemistry, immunology and physiology (see Research). What unites the groups are the overarching molecular, biochemical and cellular approaches used which call for similar equipment and facilities (see Core Facilities). Although most BMC research groups are affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine or the National Hospital, BMC also encourages other groups to join the center.
