Research focus: Professor Hardardottir’s research focuses on the effects of nutrition on inflammation and resolution of inflammation. The two major projects aim to determine the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on resolution of inflammation in murine antigen-induced inflammation and the effects of natural compounds from Icelandic nature on immune responses by dendritic cells and lymphocytes. Emphasis has been on determining the mechanism by which these nutrients affect immune responses. Professor Hardardottir runs her lab in close collaboration with Professor Jona Freysdottir. Their collaborators are Dr. Arnor Vikingsson, Specialist in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology, Landspitali – The University Hospital of Iceland, Professor Sesselja Omarsdottir, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Iceland and Professor Martin Giera, Center for Proteomics and Metabolomics, Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands.
